Slot Machine Jackpots as Big as Powerball?

Nevada could soon join with other states to offer slot machine jackpots rivaling the awards produced by multistate lotteries.

The Nevada Gaming Commission unanimously approved regulation changes Thursday that allows slot machine manufacturers to increase their prize pools by linking slot machine jackpots across state lines. The changes were proposed by slot machine giants and International Game Technology and Bally Technologies.

Other slot machine companies expressed their support for the regulation changes in letters to the Gaming Commission. Under the new regulations, slot machines in Nevada casinos could be linked with slot machines in casinos in other states, which could increase the player pools, grow the the total wagers and grow the size of large multimillion-dollar jackpots.

Nevada casinos currently offer Megabucks jackpots, which link slot machines in multiple locations. Indian casinos in California offer wide area progressive slot machine networks.

Penny Lane Slots

Boyd Gaming Corporation announced the nationwide launch of an all new Penny Lane—a unique new gaming destination combining the latest penny slot titles with a wealth of bonus opportunities for players.

With the tagline, "More Bonuses, More Often," an enhanced Penny Lane premiered early last month at Boyd Gaming's four Las Vegas locals properties—The Orleans Hotel and Casino, Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, Suncoast Hotel and Casino and Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall. And, for the first time, Penny Lane is now available five additional properties—the California Hotel and Casino, Fremont Hotel and Casino and Main Street Station Casino Brewery and Hotel in downtown Las Vegas; Delta Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel in Vinton, La.; and Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, La.

“Since we first launched Penny Lane last year, our four locals properties have become the place to play for anyone looking for the hottest new penny slot titles,” said Paul Chakmak, executive vice president and COO of Boyd Gaming in a prepared statement. “Now, we're adding a new twist to our Penny Lane line?up—an array of additional mini?bonus games, built right into players' favorite slots.”

The new bonus games will be in addition to the bonus rounds offered on many of the newest and most popular slot titles located within Penny Lane, giving players the chance to win slot play, B Connected credits, and other prizes.

To raise awareness of the new Penny Lane, Boyd Gaming is launching a nationwide marketing and advertising campaign featuring “Cool Abe,” a modern take on the face on the penny. Aimed at promoting Penny Lane in a humorous and novel way, the Cool Abe campaign will feature television, print and online elements.

Pending regulatory approval, Penny Lane will be introduced in the coming weeks at five additional Boyd Gaming properties: Blue Chip Hotel Casino Spa in Michigan City, Ind.; IP Casino Resort Spa in Biloxi, Miss.; Par?A?Dice Hotel Casino in East Peoria, Ill.; Sam's Town Hotel Casino in Shreveport, La.; and Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall in Tunica, Miss.

SLS On The Strip - Repacing the old Sahara

Robert Oseland remembers the excitement he felt opening the Mirage as a blackjack dealer. He was part of something big and cutting edge, part of the future envisioned by Steve Wynn.

Oseland, a Chicago native who came to Las Vegas to study at UNLV, has chased that feeling throughout his career.

In the years since, he has worked as a slot executive at the Bellagio, chief operating officer at the Wynn and Encore, and now president of SLS Las Vegas.

The brainchild of SBE Entertainment CEO Sam Nazarian, the $415 million, 1,600-room resort budding on the former grounds of the Sahara has been considered a key factor in the recovery of the Strip’s struggling north end. The resort is scheduled to open next fall.

We’re sort of forced into the past by taking over a 1950s building versus re-creating something. We’re excited about the concentration of energy. In the past, casinos were the focal point of the resort experience. As Las Vegas grew up, we built bigger and bigger and grander places, and we lost that connectivity. The lure and luster and excitement of the casino has been left behind for other experiences. It’s food and beverage and nightlife oriented. The casino ends up competing for the space.

Table Games are Key to Las Vegas Future

When it comes to gaming in Nevada, table games remain an important part of the casino layout and revenue. As online gaming continues its expansion, table games will become even more important to the financial health of a casino floor, one industry observer said.

“Live table play remains a unique (experience) that cannot be replicated online,” David G. Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said Tuesday in an hourlong presentation at the Table Games Conference at Paris Las Vegas.

Schwartz said the slot experience is now replicated across many “platforms,” with no real benefit to playing in a casino besides drink service and cardboard checks given to winners of slot jackpots.

“Now is the time to invest in table game players,” Schwartz told about 140 conference attendees. “Not in 10 years when the next generation (of casual gamblers) has gone digital. Invest now while they are still there.”
